Teenagers robbed in uMhlanga Ridge

One of the teenagers was also robbed of his tekkies by the armed suspects.

FOUR teenagers were allegedly robbed of their valuables by three armed men on Park Lane in uMhlanga Ridge on Sunday evening. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, the incident occurred at about 7.30pm close to Chris Saunders Park.

The teenagers were walking to one of their friend’s flats in the area when they were approached by three men all wearing peaked caps.

“One of the men pulled out a gun and cocked the weapon and demanded the boys’ valuables. His accomplices then riffled through their pockets and took their wallets, cellphones as well as one of the victim’s tekkies. They put all the stolen items into the bag and fled on foot towards the Prestondale area. One of the victims, a 17-year-old, opened a case and alleged that the items stolen from him alone amounted to R12 500,” he said.

Deokaran warned parents to urge their children to stay in well-lit areas and to make a designated drop-off and collection point.

“This isn’t the first incident to occur with the same modus operandi. This trio of suspects are targeting youngsters possibly viewing them as soft targets. I urge parents to remind their kids not to wander to isolated areas or hang around parks late at night,” he said.

The incident comes a week after a teenage girl evaded an armed mugger in the toilets at Gateway Theatre of Shopping.
