Inspiring change for plus-size women
The group hopes to encourage women to adopt more forgiving and affirming attitudes towards their bodies, with the goal of improving overall health and well-being.
WHEN Noxolo Mchunu began the body-positive group, Fat and Ugly (FAU), she did not anticipate the overwhelming positive response from residents. The group was formed earlier this year in the hopes of challenging the narrow image of beauty and healthy by redefining what it actually means.
The group hopes to encourage women to adopt more forgiving and affirming attitudes towards their bodies, with the goal of improving overall health and well-being.
Since their formation, the group have been given a time slot on Inanda FM (88.4) to inspire other plus-sized women and to discuss issues affecting them.
They recently hosted its first ever social event at Japanese Gardens.
“The idea was to get the girls together and to raise awareness for what we do. The response on the day and since we started our journey has been phenomenal. We’ve got women from all over KZN and the country which is great. It’s become a platform for us to share our stories and inspire others. We’ve all grown up in environments where we were teased or shamed for being fat.
“While our stories may differ, that’s something we all have in common. I think in choosing the name ‘Fat and Ugly’ we wanted the word ‘fat’ to lose its status as a bad or insulting term. In a similar way we want to make a difference to women, young and old to accept their bodies,” Mchunu said.
