Driver critical after Blackburn Road accident

The cause of the accident is unknown at this stage and Greenwood Park police are investigating.

THE driver of a municipal vehicle is in a critical condition after an accident on Blackburn Road. According to Crisis Medical’s Kyle van Reenen, the driver lost control of his vehicle while travelling up Blackburn Road before veering across the oncoming lane and crashing into the palisade fence of the sports grounds.

“Five occupants of the vehicle suffered minor injuries while the driver, believed to be around 50 years of age was critically injured. Members of Netcare 911, KZN EMS, and the Durban North fire department worked to stabilise the driver who had to be freed with the Jaws of Life.  He has been placed on a mechanical ventilator and taken through to Netcare uMhlanga Hospital,” he said.

One lane of Blackburn Road was cordoned off to allow rescue personnel to attend to the scene of the accident.

Van Reenen added the cause of the accident was speculative and would form part of a police investigation.
