KWAZULU-NATAL MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mxolisi Kaunda has promised they will do everything in their power to eradicate crime in the province during the festive season.

Kaunda was speaking at eThekwini Municipality’s first-ever Metro Police Open Day and Festive Season Launch at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Tuesday.

Kaunda said they will ‘squeeze’ and ‘suffocate’ criminals so that they have no space in society. He added that they will be doing rounds in all criminal hot spots and townships to make sure that criminals have nowhere to hide.

“We have declared zero tolerance on acts of crime both on our road networks and in communities. To this end we have developed a comprehensive festive season safety plan which will ensure increased police visibility in all corners of this province,” said Kaunda.

The MEC also said that during the festive season, there will be roadblocks where vehicles will be checked and drivers tested for alcohol.

The Mayor said she was delighted to be at the inaugural Metro Police Open Day which she said made Durban a trendsetter.

“We were the first Metro to establish the Metro Police in this country on 1 July 2000 as a consequence of the SAPS Amendment Act of 1998. They do a good job in traffic policing and the policing of municipal regulations and bylaws. Their most important job is prevention of crime in the city,” Gumede said.

There were demonstrations on how the Metro Police handle different situations on the job. One that had the public on their feet was the demonstration on how to handle mass protests and violent marches.
