Local resident tackles Durban Harbour
Glenashley resident, Bart Fokkens was joined by a group of Point Yacht Club members who cleaned an island on the busy Durban Harbour.
LOCAL resident, Bart Fokkens was one of a group of Point Yacht Club members who pitched in this past weekend to clean the Durban Harbour.
The team cleaned the island in the middle of the harbour. Durban Harbour is the largest and busiest shipping terminal in sub-Saharan Africa. It handles up to 31.4 million tons of cargo each year.

Fokkens, a Glenashley resident and a Durban field manager for Duzi uMngeni Conservation Trust (DUCT) said close on 100 bags were ferried back onto land, filled with oil soaked rubbish, polystyrene take away containers, can and bottles, shoes, and thousands of plastic packets, and the haul also included a complete car bumper, a bar fridge and several intact light bulbs.

The clean-up initiative spearheaded by passionate catamaran sailor, Wayne Smith will become a more regular initiative with organisers trying to curb the amount of litter flowing into the oceans.
