KWAZULU-Natal police have confirmed they have opened a case of rape after a matric learner was allegedly raped by a fellow learner from her school.  Lt Colonel Thulani Zwane, provincial spokesman, said the suspect in the case had been arrested.

“We can confirm the incident took place on 4 December at a hotel in uMhlanga. An 18-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a known suspect and a case of rape was opened at Durban North SAPS. The suspect was arrested and will appear in court soon,” he said.

While he could not divulge details, it is believed the victim was asked to come up to the suspect’s room before he grabbed her around the neck and forced himself on the teenager. It is understood the two were in uMhlanga for the annual matric rage festival.

Carol van Tonder, founder of the Durban North/Umhlanga Crisis Team (DNUCT) and trauma counsellor said often after sexual assault cases, there is  a tendency to blame victims of rape rather than the actions of the rapist.

“If you don’t want to be touched but you are, that’s a problem.  ‘No means no’, there are no excuses. People always look for reasons as to why a women was raped or what could be done to avoid being raped. We need to stop teaching women how not be raped and we should instead be looking at the actions of men who rape,” van Tonder said.

She urged victims of rape or sexual assault to open a case with the police and to seek out counselling
