Crusaders women net hockey league promotion

For the first time in the club's history, the women's team have broken into the highest echelon of competitive club hockey.

A WORD that best sums-up the last three seasons of the Northwood Crusaders women’s team is monumental. The team, which was in the third division has climbed the ranks all the way to the premier division. For the first time in the club’s history, the women’s team have broken into the highest echelon of competitive hockey.

Incredibly, the team was able to do this, despite finishing third this season because Kearsney and Riverside hockey clubs could not be promoted as they had teams in the premier division.

Catherine Woods, chair lady of the club said their men’s team was their inspiration.

“It’s going to be a big step-up for us next season but one we are looking forward to. The premier division is very competitive but our strength has always been how we play as a team. There’s no big personality or anyone trying to steal the limelight, everything we do is for the team. A big inspiration for us is our men’s team who played their first season in the premier division and they managed to finish fifth which was incredible because no one gave them a chance,” Woods said.

Emma Pennefather, who finished as the season’s top goal scorer with 18 goals, said the vibe and family-orientatedness of the club was what attracted her to the club.

“I joined the club this season and a major part of my decision was the vibe of the club. I really felt welcomed from the first practise and it was just an amazing feeling to be part of this team,” she said.

Callie Starr, goalie of the team earned the MVP player of the season award, also paid tribute to her teammates.

“This title is an honour, considering when you view the people who’ve won it previously, having said that, it’s more about the team goals then my own. What we’ve achieved in the past three seasons has been phenomenal, it’s so pleasing going through three promotions,” Starr said.
