13 injured in horror head-on crash on M4

Two people are in critical condition following the crash on the Ruth First Highway.

A TOTAL of 13 people were injured after a head-on collision on the M4 Ruth First Highway on Saturday morning. According to Crisis Medical’s Kyle van Reenen, the crash occurred just after the Broadway off-ramp. Various emergency personnel teams including Netcare 911 and Rescue Care Paramedics were also on scene.

“It is believed a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction (south) careened over the centre median colliding head-on with a fully laden minibus taxi.  Thirteen people suffered injuries ranging from minor to critical.  Five people were entrapped in the wreckage and the Jaws of life were used to cut them free.

“Once treated and stabilized on scene the injured were taken by various ambulances to nearby hospitals. Traffic on the M4 north bound was severely affected while emergency services worked to clear the scene,” he said.

According to Netcare 911 paramedics, two people are said to be in a critical condition.

Rescue Care’s Garrith Jamieson, said “the events leading up to the collision are unknown however SAPS is on the scene and will be investigating further.”

In September, a horror crash on the M4 claimed the life of one person and left 15 others injured.
