Air travel trends revealed

King Shaka International Airport is one of the strongest performers with a 8.7 per cent rise in domestic arrivals.

AIRPORTS Company South Africa (ACSA) have released their Quarter 3 Aviation Barometer findings which counts air travel from July to September 2017. According to the report, Durban’s King Shaka International Airport was the strongest performer with an increase of  7.9 per cent in air travellers.

The Aviation Barometer is published quarterly by ACSA to provide an indication of current air travel trends in South Africa. It is based on the count of passengers using the network of nine airports owned and managed by ACSA.

Airports Company South Africa’s nine airports handled more than 2.5 million arriving and departing passengers in the third quarter, a five per cent increase on the comparable period in 2016.

“The passenger figures for King Shaka International Airport was underpinned by an 8.7 per cent rise in domestic arrivals and an 8.3 per cent increase in departures, more than offsetting a decline of three per cent in international passengers,” Julie Cunningham, Director, Strategic Communications at FTI Consulting said.

She added that Cape Town International continued to enjoy strong growth in international arrivals, up by 20.4 per cent, and international departures, up by 22.5 per cent.  O. R. Tambo International Airport, operating off a higher base of more than 20 million passengers a year, saw total passenger numbers rise by 2.9 per cent, an increase of 154 445 passengers.

The domestic air travel category recovered  after a decline in the second quarter, with arrivals up by 4.6 per cent and departures rising by 4.9 per cent.
