WATCH: Mt Moreland residents say ‘no’ to cell mast

The 35-metre high tower was approved recently.

MOUNT Moreland residents are hoping an appeal process will halt the erection of a 35-metre high cell mast on Charles Road. This after the tower, which is set to be situated on one of the resident’s properties, was approved, despite objections. The proposed cellular mast will be shaped in the form of a tree.

Danie Rademeyer, one of the residents opposed to the mast held a public meeting with residents of the community two weeks ago to voice their discontent over the mast.

He addressed a crowd of around 30 other residents who were concerned about the news and held up placards showing their disapproval. Rademeyer’s home is next to the proposed mast site.

Rademeyer added the family whose property the mast would be situated on had also changed their mind and asked to halt the process but were allegedly told they had to pay a large sum of money in order to stop the process.

The company involved in the erection of the tower, Atlas Tower, said in an email they had applied for the necessary approvals from the South African Civil Aviation Authority which had been approved.

A representative said: “We adhere to the applicable rules, regulations, and requirements that govern the proper sitting and operation of communication facilities in all municipalities. Our communication facilities are exponentially below both South Africa’s accepted EMF exposure limits and all international accepted standards. Today’s modern wireless networks provide low cost access to information that does not discriminate based on where you are, who you are, or how you live.”
