Man dragged into bushes and robbed on M4 off-ramp

Two of the men were armed with large sticks and held the motorist down during the robbery.

DURBAN North SAPS are looking for three men believed to be linked to an armed robbery which occurred on Saturday morning at about 5.30am on the M4 off-ramp going towards Riverside Road. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, the local resident had a break down on the M4 and took the off-ramp towards Riverside Road.

“He tried to push his vehicle closer to the Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve entrance to not block the M4 off-ramp. He was approached by three men who offered to help, when the motorist declined, the men grabbed him and dragged him into the bushes near the reserve. Two of the men were armed with large sticks.

“They held him down and threatened him and told him not to scream for help. The men then riffled through his pockets stealing his iPhone 7 and his wallet. The suspects fled on foot and are still at large. The victim was able to flag down a passing motorist who called for police assistance,” he said.

This is the first incident near Riverside Road since the stabbing and robbery of uMgeni Park cyclist, Brad Wilson.

The robbery also comes months after a cyclist was dragged down the steps of the Ellis Brown Viaduct’s tower. She was saved by Rinaldo Road businessman, Andy Craig, who chased the attackers away and called for medical assistance.
