Two arrested after uMhlanga village brawl

AN alleged racist brawl which broke out on Chartwell Drive on Friday night led to the arrest of two men. The violent altercation, which was captured on video, was posted on social media sites shortly afterwards.

According to Captain Nqobile Gwala, provincial SAPS spokesperson, the suspects aged 29 and 55 were charged with discharging a firearm in a public area.

“Police received a complaint of a fight in uMhlanga. On arrival they found a group of people fighting, one of whom was in possession of a firearm. The second man took the firearm and fired shots into the air. No injuries were reported. They were charged with discharging a firearm in a public area, unlawful possession of a firearm and failing to safe guard a firearm,” Gwala said.

Chairman of the Durban North/Umhlanga CPF, Haden Searles, slammed the behaviour calling it ‘unacceptable’.

“I believe alcohols and guns don’t mix. This type of behaviour is unacceptable. I would urge establishments in the village to crack down on unruly people or to call the police to diffuse the situation,” he said.
