Durban North armed robbery leads to high-speed chase, shootout

The armed suspects are still at large.

POLICE and Marshall Security are looking for an armed gang involved in a home invasion on Lonsdale Drive. The gang stormed the home just after 1.40pm and assaulted the homeowner’s son, who was at home at the time of the robbery. The son was struck over the head with the firearm during the robbery.

According to Kyle van Reenen, Marshall Security’s spokesman, the suspects were then involved in a high-speed chase along Kenneth Kaunda (Northway).

“The suspects were spotted fleeing the scene of the crime and tried to escape along Northway. They fired several rounds at pursuing officers from Marshall Security’s Special Operations Team. Approximately 10 rounds were fired at the vehicle. The suspects also drove contra-flow along Masabalala Yengwa Avenue (NMR) in order to lose pursuing officers.

“We lost sight of the suspect’s vehicle, a white BMW, near Greyville Race Course. The vehicle was later recovered, abandoned, on  Charlotte Maxeke (Beatrice) Street. Luckily, all the stolen property was recovered in the vehicle. Police also found a revolver and several rounds of ammunition in the boot as well as a pickaxe head. They also found the vehicle had been fitted with false numberplates,” he said.

Speaking on the robbery, van Reenen, said a case was being opened by Greenwood Park SAPS.

“During the robbery, the suspects ransacked the premises stealing an iPhone 6, a laptop and numerous other small items. His son declined medical assistance following the robbery,” he said.
