Severe weather conditions force removal of shark nets
Sharks Board removes the nets to minimise damage to the gear ahead of a busy December season.
THE KZN Sharks Board have removed the shark nets following severe weather warnings by SA Weather Services.
In a statement, the head of operations at the board, Mike Anderson-Reade said the unsettled seas and large swells that have been forecast could result in the movement or damage to shark safety gear should it remain in the water.

He said the KZN Sharks Board‘s operational management team has been monitoring the cut-off low pressure system that is set to affect the weather and sea conditions off KZN late on Wednesday. The swell forecasting models that the Board monitors are all predicting unsettled seas and a strong ground swells of up to 3m.

Anderson-Reade added that with the very busy December season approaching and in order to minimise any damage or losses of gear, the Sharks Board, in consultation with the affected Municipalities, this morning removed shark safety gear at the majority of protected bathing beaches.
“The shark safety nets will be replaced as soon as the seas have settled and we are confident that the gear will remain stable,” Anderson-Reade said.
