AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) will celebrate its 30-year anniversary with a series of events that includes the screening of the film, Keeping the Promise.

The AHF is the largest global AIDS healthcare organisation which now provides HIV/AIDS care and services, including anti-retroviral treatment, to more than 821 000 people in 39 countries.

As part of its 30th anniversary, AHF is hosting receptions and screenings of the new one-hour documentary, Keeping the Promise this November. The screening in Durban will be at Gateway on Wednesday, 15 November at 6pm.

Through interviews with AHF stakeholders from over the years coupled with archival video footage culled from AHF’s 30 years of advocacy, care and activism, the film tells a compelling story of AHF’s history while offering a glimpse of, and road map to its future.

Founded in 1987 first as the AIDS Hospice Committee and later the AIDS Hospice Foundation, AHF’s earliest days were a heartfelt, grassroots community effort to provide end-of-life hospice care to people with AIDS. Thirty years later, it has grown to become the largest global AIDS organisation.

Hilary Thulare, AHF South Africa Country Programme Director said: “When AHF opened its first clinic outside the USA in South Africa over 16 years ago, during a time of AIDS denialism and desperation, it cemented its commitment to eradicating AIDS through cutting edge medicine and advocacy, regardless of ability to pay. AHF South Africa is proud to have been an important part of the AHF story and with over 100 000 patients in care, we are not done yet.”
