‘Genuinely kind’ taxi driver returns lost cell phone
A taxi driver from the Umgeni Taxi Association has proven to a local resident the concept of ubuntu is alive and well.
GOOD Samaritans still exist today, just ask Briardene Informal Settlement resident, Lebohang Maieane, who accidentally left her cell phone behind in a taxi last week.
A taxi driver from the Umgeni Taxi Association has proven to Maieane the concept of ubuntu is alive and well after returning her phone to her just hours after she misplaced it.
“I was sitting in the front seat of the taxi and must have left my phone on the seat when I was getting out. This was around 4pm during the rush hour traffic rush. I got home and began the chores, cooking and cleaning. About two hours later I decided to go check my messages and I began to panic. I emptied out my bag and retraced my steps but couldn’t find my phone. I even phoned my number and when it didn’t ring at home I knew I had left it behind in the taxi,” she said.

“Eventually the taxi driver answered after me trying to call him and he arranged for me to meet him in the CBD. When I eventually met him he gave me back my phone, no questions asked and he just warned me to be more careful in the future. I’m so grateful to him. Ubuntu busekhona, some people are genuinely kind and honest. I hope God blesses his soul.”
Maieane said, besides learning a lesson, she hoped her story would prove that not all taxi drivers were bad.
“I think they are often vilified by motorists and we, sometimes as passengers. But I know there are some good guys out there and this driver is certainly one of them.”
