Local resident gives back for ‘mahala’

The first Mahala Market will be set up in EMBO and 200 Gogos have been invited to come and 'shop for free' and hoping to bless them with at least five new outfits each of their choosing.

THIS spring, the Robin Hood Foundation’s Clothes for Africa Drive will host the Mahala Market to donate clothes to underprivileged residents. To make a bigger difference, the foundation is requesting donations of any pre-loved clothing, blankets, towels, scarves, hats and more. All sizes from new-born to adult are welcome – as along as it’s in good condition.

A local resident who has taken on this initiative, is Shivanie Naidoo. The La Lucia resident and local businesswoman has been supporting the foundation for the past five years. She said the most rewarding thing about the initiative was seeing her children’s mindset change to serve the heart of the community.

“I first learned about Robin Hood about five years ago while attending an Umhlanga Women Achievers (UWA) event and I was so blown away by Kim (Griffith Jones) and the foundation did. For me the rewarding thing was seeing my son and daughter begin to become more charitable. When my daughter, Lyshka, lost a tooth, she was rewarded with R10 from the tooth fairy. Without anyone asking she handed over the R10 to Kim which showed me the biggest change,” Naidoo said.

The first market will be held on Thursday, 16 November at the Embo Hall. The first Mahala Market will be set up in EMBO and 200 Gogos have been invited to come and ‘shop for free’ and hoping to bless them with at least five new outfits each of their choosing.

“Each of our Gogo bags is always filled with an assortment of clothing and we’ve seen the happiness on the Gogos faces when they find something in the bag just for them. So we thought – why not do something like this for the Gogo’s with help from the community. We are appealing to our community to have a spring clean and donate any great condition pre-loved clothing/blanket/towels/scarves/hats/beaded jewellery for our drive,” said Cindy Norcott, chairlady of the foundation.
