WARD 110 councillor, Pete Graham has urged residents using Malacca Road dumpsite to report illegal behaviour by municipal officials. This comes after allegations of two residents saying they were told to pay in order to dump their rubbish at the site. One resident who spoke to Northglen News on condition of anonymity, said he was told he had to pay R500 in order to dump his rubbish on site.
“I’d never been to the dump before and when I arrived and began unloading my rubbish, I was approached by one of the workers who asked me what I was doing. I told him I was busy offloading my rubbish and he said that I wasn’t able to because I had to pay. I hesitated not knowing what to do and refused to pay him but he in turn told me I couldn’t dump there. I drove away not knowing what my rights were. I eventually drove to another dump to get rid of my rubbish there. I just want to warn residents not to give any money for dumping at the site,” he said.

Pete Graham echoed the resident’s sentiments saying illegal dumping was an issue in the area.
“As far as I know, no fees are charged at the garden sites and the transfer stations, only landfill sites have the tariffs. I urge residents to report this type of behaviour to me or to contact Durban Solid Waste (DSW). At this point I haven’t received any allegations about money being paid to workers to dump but I urge residents not to exchange any money when dumping. There is a sign board clearly stating the rules of the dump. This service is free to the public, no money is to be exchanged on site,” he said.
