The Durban North resident became the first South African in history to address the World Karate Congress.

KARATE South Africa (KSA) President Sonny Pillay Hanshi was been invited by the World Karate Federation (WKF) to address the World Karate Congress during the WKF World Cup for cadets and juniors in Spain.

The Durban North resident who also serves on the World karate technical board gave an overview on the current status quo with respect to progress made by KSA given the challenges it previously faced with the sporting authorities of South Africa.

“This was a first for South Africa in the KSA era of karate that a South African was invited to address the WKF world congress in the midst of over 180 national presidents from world over,” said Pillay.

During his one week stay in Tenerife (Canary Islands) the karate maestro  also attended the annual WKF Technical Congress as a member of the 13 man board.

Given that karate has been recently elevated to an Olympic sport, major decisions in respect of technical matters were expected to be approved at the congress. Pillay who recently celebrated his 50 years in the karate field,  also lobbied to win the WKF International events for the city of Durban for the next two years.
