Land appropriation high on ANC’s agenda

ANC treasurer general Dr Zweli Mkhize was speaking in uMhlanga on Wednesday.

THE ANC’s treasurer general Dr Zweli Mkhize was in uMhlanga yesterday where he hosted a breakfast session at Coastlands Hotel. He shared his views on the current state of affairs in South Africa ahead of the ANC elective conference in next month.

Mkhize said that the ANC leadership should be united and in touch with the concerns of  South Africans people going into the important elective conference. He said that was the only way to deal with the social distance between people and government.

“Factions and in-fighting need to be dealt with. These issues are as a result of people who want to remain in positions of power. Corruption, ill-discipline, can only be dealt with if the ANC is united. State capture would’ve be dealt with effectively if the organisation was united,” Mkhize said.

Mkhize said: “We allowed a lot of political slating and factionalism in Mangaung in 2007. I was part of it and that is why I feel so strongly against it. We need leaders who will say, “Do not divide the organisation in our names. The ANC needs leaders who will not see the party as a source of income and power but be willing to serve together,” said Mkhize.

He said that the ruling party had its work cut of for it after the conference in December adding that land appropriation and economic development would be high on the agenda

“There is a lot of land hunger in townships which raises the need to give back the land. Numbers of people have increased from the time when 13 per cent of land was allocated to black people in rural areas. We need to accelerate the return of land and help people in how to use the land that’s already been returned.”

Mkhize said while government had been making headway in clamping down on corruption, a lot more still needs to be done.

“A lot of government officials have been either charged or suspended for their involvement in corruption. It’s usually the office bearers because ordinary members have no capacity to do that. We need to act quicker to deal with the issue. Ultimately the leadership should take responsibility for the entire performance of the structure,” Mkhize concluded.
