Local snake man rescues crocodile from stormwater drain
Jason Arnold recently rescued his first ever Nile crocodile.
IT’S been a busy few days for Sunningdale snake man, Jason Arnold, who has gone from rescuing spitting cobras from a Durban North resident’s garage to extracting a large black mamba from a Reservoir Hills home.
Recently however, he rescued his first ever Nile crocodile. Arnold was called out to Illovo Glen in Kingsburgh after construction workers spotted what they thought was a crocodile near a ravine.
“I assumed they meant a water monitor or leguaan because there was no ways it was a crocodile to my mind. I asked the lady who initially called to send me a photo and sure enough it was juvenile crocodile. As I was driving to the scene, another resident, with a reptile background tried to grab the croc who was forced into the stormwater drains.
“Fortunately I was small enough go down into drain and I walked along the drain for about two kilometres when I came face to face with the reptile. I was able to rescue him before handing him over to Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife officials. He is due to be released in St Lucia later this week. I estimate him to be around 2-4 years old. I must say this was one of the strongest reptiles I’ve ever rescued, I always thought leguaans were strong, but holy-moly this young croc was ten times more powerful,” Arnold said.
