Concert performer hopes to give ‘life a line’

Acoustic maskandi duo, Qadasi and Maqhinga on a quest to revive the powerful sounds of traditional Maskandi music.

FRENCH-CONGOLESE singer Rene Tshiakanyi and friends come to the Alliance Francaise de Durban for one night of live music on Thursday, 2 November at 6pm in a concert of hope as a fund raiser for Lifeline Durban, for which Rene is an ambassador.

Rene Tshiakanyi is a familiar presence at elegant dining establishments in and around greater Durban. Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, he relocated to South Africa in 2008 and now resides in Durban.

Singing in multiple languages, he describes his music and compositions as a mixture of classic pop; RnB; reggae and Zouk, which is a mixture of French and Caribbean music. His sound is undeniably distinctive.

Rene Tshiakanyi is a brand ambassador for Lifeline Durban – a professional and confidential counselling service dealing with emotional crisis, trauma, abuse, violence, rape, HIV/AIDS and depression/suicide.

He is an active ambassador for orphans and vulnerable children who are victims of the ongoing unrest and violence in Eastern Congo, and closer to home he is an ambassador for Lifeline Durban.

Rene will be joined on stage by Richard Ellis – Durban based music maker and multi-percussionist specialising in congas, djembes and electronic percussion pads, who is currently teaching hand drums at St. Henry’s Marist College.

Qadasi (David Jenkins) is an accomplished maskandi guitarist who will be joined by Maqhinga Radebe on stage. The acoustic duo on a quest to revive the powerful sounds of traditional Maskandi music and will be the supporting acts.
