SA Paralympian champions cancer support

The accomplished athlete is actively involved in raising funds for cancer related charities.

THE Umhlanga Cancer Support group hosted South Africa Paralympic Champion and motivational speaker Tyrone Pillay at their monthly meeting on Wednesday. The Cancer Support Group meets every third Wednesday of the month at the Umhlanga Oncology Centre.

The group serves as a support system to all those affected by cancer, whether they are a cancer patient, survivor or friends and family of those affected by cancer. Cancer strikes close to home for Pillay, the shot-putter who won the seventh medal for South Africa in the Rio Paralympic Games last year. He competed in F42 category, winning bronze for SA.

In 2013 he braved his fear of heights and climbed a staggering 500 steps to the top of the Moses Mabhida Stadium arch in order to raise funds for charities, CANSA Mkhuhla Care Home (KZN) and Jumping Kids. His efforts raised a whopping R275 000. He credits his father’s passing as motivation for wanting to make a difference.

He praised the support group saying; “A support structure is necessary to help you through the difficult times. We can do so much, if we are together.”
