WP stun Sharks and Kings Park faithful

DHL Western Province rock Sharks to win Currie Cup title

A SPARKLING second half saw DHL Western Province secure their 34th Currie Cup title against the Cell C Sharks side at Growthpoint Kings Park on Saturday. At the final whistle, the score ended in favour of the visitors 33-21. The Sharks had led 21-15 at half-time, but an error-ridden display from the home team cost them dearly in the second 40.

The Sharks who boasted, a relatively unchanged squad scored two tries to Western Province’s four. This was the eight final contested between the provincial rivals.

The Sharks last won the coveted cup in 2013 beating Western Province in Cape Town, however it was not to be this time around. This was John Dobson’s first piece of major silverware as Western Province coach.

Head coach Robert du Preez praised his side despite the loss.

“This is a very young group and we’re also preparing for next year’s Super Rugby season and beyond, and as long as this group stays together, that will bode well for the future.”

The game also served as a farewell for Odwa Ndungane, who coincidentally scored a try in the final. Having arrived in Durban in 2005, Ndungane has been an integral part of the team finishing his rugby career having been capped 251 times by the men in black.
