High tea to highlight early cancer detection

The high tea was hosted by the non-profit organisation, BWA.

THE Businesswomen’s Association of South Africa (BWA) hosted ‘Time for Tea’ recently to help spread breast cancer awareness.
BWA is national non-profit organisation aimed at empowering business women, through networking and skills development. BWA representative Catherine Smith said: “The event is focused on breast cancer awareness and the importance of being aware as an woman.”

Held at Coastlands Musgrave Hotel, on Wednesday the programme provided women with all the essentials should they ever be diagnosed with breast cancer. The presentation included speakers that discussed post-diagnosis lifestyle adjustments, healthcare and insurance considerations, radiology and other assessments necessary should one be diagnosed.

Keynote speaker and breast cancer survivor Nicole Kirk gave the audience a heart wrenching account of her journey from diagnosis to treatment. She is still receiving treatment, through radiotherapy and chemotherapy, post mastectomy. She told a cautionary tale of the acute awareness women need to have when it comes to their health. She said, “Your health is your wealth, don’t wait to get a breast cancer diagnosis, take action, do you.”

Host Mandisa Skhosana echoed Kirk’s sentiments saying, “If you feel a lump, don’t feel that you were ignorant, because then you stigmatise the disease, remember life happens.”
Skhosana concluded the evening by announcing the winners of the raffle. The raffle proceeds were donated to the Sunflower Fund that educates and registers stem cell donors.
