Biker killed in M4 crash

The fatal crash comes 11 days after Durban North SAPS opened a case of culpable homicide where two people were killed in a head-on-collision.

A TWENTY TWO year old man was killed on Thursday morning on the Ruth First Highway. According to Crisis Medical’s Kyle van Reenen, the accident occurred on the south bound carriageway.

“When we arrived on scene we discovered the motorcyclist when he hit two sandbags obviously lost a bit of control before being thrown off his Harley. His body was found behind the armco barrier, on the center of the island and suffered fatal injuries. Unfortunately there was nothing paramedics could do to assist him and he was declared deceased on arrival. The scene was handed over to the South African Police Services for further investigation and processing,” Van Reenen said.

The fatal accident involving the biker was preceded by a 25-year-old sustaining injuries after his vehicle rolled near the La Lucia off-ramp. According to Van Reenen, indications from the scene suggest the driver of the vehicle lost control at high speed, colliding with the centre median, before overturning several times. The fatal crash comes a week after Durban North SAPS opened a case of culpable homicide. In that incident two people were killed while a third was seriously injured.

According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North station, investigations were ongoing.

“It’s alleged one of the drivers travelling on the M4 northbound crossed over the centre median before crashing head-on into another vehicle. Two people were sadly killed while a third is in a critical condition. It’s unclear what factors led to the crash but we are investigating the case and I can confirm a culpable homicide case has been opened against one of the drivers,” he said.
