Police clamp down on M4 emergency lane ‘road hogs’

Most of the fines were issued to taxi drivers.

METRO POLICE were out in full force yesterday morning on the M4 highway. They targeted motorists with a flagrant disregard for the rules of the road – those who use the emergency lane to get ahead of traffic.

Earlier this year, Durban North SAPS spokesman, Capt Raymond Deokaran  said they received several complaints about ‘emergency lane hogs’.

Drivers were caught off guard when Metro Police were patrolling north-bound just after the Broadway on-ramp.

According to Senior Superintendent of the Metro Police, Parboo Sewpersad, 25 motorists were prosecuted for using the shoulder of the roadway. What’s more said Sewpersad,  “Almost 90 per cent were public transporting vehicles.”

“We will continue and intensify our operations by bringing these errant drivers to book. Drivers and owners of these vehicles must be fully aware that they transport priceless assets in their vehicles. These kind of operations will be ongoing on various routes. We will also be closely monitoring CCTV cameras and informing the police on the grounds as the contraventions are taking place,” said Sewpersad.
