Durban storm wreaks havoc at animal rehab centre

The CROW team sprang into action to save their animal patients when the storm that shook Durban collapsed enclosures at the centre last week.

IT was all hands-on deck at CROW last week when a devastating torrential downpour with wind speed recorded at 70 km/h tore through the centre, as it did the whole of Durban on Tuesday, 10 October.

Heavy rains wreaked havoc from the South of Durban right through to the South Coast, leading to extensive flooding and damage to properties.

CROW’s marketing and communications officer, Chandré de Bruyn said, “It all started off with light rains and a cooling breeze that caused a bit of humour watching our residential Grey- Headed Heron enjoy mother nature at her best. The next moment, we just saw a stream of water flow down the driveway that lead to chaos.

“The entire team of staff and volunteers sprang into action to quickly evacuate patients to safe areas within our clinic. While trees collapsed onto enclosures and areas flooded, the wind threw debris around like a hurricane. In the wake of the storm, a young mongoose lost his life and the team were left battered and bruised,”de Bruyn said.

The CROW clinic remains a hive of activity as animals are treated in their temporary enclosures in the clinic. Once all the patients have been attended to, the team will begin the clean-up and repairs which comes at the busiest season of the year for CROW, baby season.
