17 arrested for drunk driving on M4

Since the beginning of this year, more than 160 drivers have been arrested for drunk driving on the M4 and M41.

DURBAN North SAPS held a roadblock on Saturday night which resulted in the arrest of 17 alleged drunken drivers on the M4 Ruth First Highway.  The roadblock was held on the M4 near the Virginia off-ramp and was a joint operation with the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI).

The arrests come five days after a fatal accident on the M4 claimed the life of two people.

“On the night we had the usual comments about us focusing on soft targets which is not the case. There has been a spate of accidents on the M4 and one where a vehicle overturned just hours before our roadblock started,” he explained.

Deokaran reiterated the message of the zero tolerance approach to drunk driving.

“Too many motorists are still risking their own safety as well as that of other road users by driving their vehicles after they have consumed alcohol. It is truly concerning how common place drunk driving is. We cannot continue to ignore the problem and allow drunk drivers to take to the street. If you’re going to drink, then don’t drive, either take a cab or make some other arrangement to get home,” he said.
