Free snake chart to help residents with information

FROM a young age, Tyrone Ping’s fascination with reptiles has been displayed for all to see. As a photographer, the Durban North resident has photographed snakes across the country. Now he is on a new mission, to spread awareness and combat misinformation about snake species. He recently shared an infographic designed by the African Snakebite Institute, founded by renowned South African author, Johan Marais.

Ping who works for the institute, said the posters have been developed for each major city centre, province as well as some neighbouring African countries and popular holiday destinations.

“One of our main missions is to provide factual and correct information to the public and dispel many of these myths and fictitious stories related to snakes that seem to get viral status. We get a lot of calls from people telling us they have been bitten by a snake, and they don’t know what to do, and these posters give a lot of information on snakes found locally, their appearance, as well as their status such as whether they are poisonous or harmful,” he said.

“These posters are freely available on our Facebook page and can be sent via post. We also have specific posters on how to deal with a snake bite, whether you are bitten by a green mamba or a stiletto snake. Every snake’s venom is different and affects a person differently,” he said.
