‘Try’umphant SA call-up for Fatima learners

The local trio have had a stellar year in touch rugby winning bronze for the KwaZulu-Natal U17A team at the inter-provincial champs held in the Bluff.

THREE Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School learners have been selected for the South African team for the Federation of International Touch (FIT) Youth Touch World Cup which will be held in Malaysia next year. Naomi Maujean, Paige Waberski and Tannah Swart have had a stellar year in touch rugby winning bronze for the KwaZulu-Natal U17A team at the inter-provincial champs held in the Bluff. The girls, who are also part of the school’s first team also won the school touch rugby school league.

Northglen News recently caught up with the trio to find out about their call-up to the national team.

“I was really surprised but excited when they announced the squad. It’s a huge honour to represent SA but having my friends with me makes it that more special. I’ve only been playing touch rugby for three years and this is an incredible opportunity for me and Paige and Naomi,” Swart said. “My family were over the moon, especially my sister, she played for KZN so she was ecstatic when she heard,” she said.

Another player with touch rugby in the blood is Naomi, whose sister, Hannah, selected the SA team at the Federation of International Touch (FIT) World Cup in Coffs Harbour, Australia.

“What is really awesome is my sister has been selected for the U20 team this year so it will be great to have her there. I’ve watched a world cup which was fantastic but to be playing in one will be even more special. We are grateful the KZN touch rugby union is endorsed by The Sharks, that’s really helped the sport grow as well as our games,” said the KZN U17A MVP.

Paige, echoed her teammates’ thoughts saying the world cup would provide its own unique challenges.

“It’s a great feeling. I think it’s helped me personally grow as a player and improve on my skills. We have no doubt next year will be challenging but we want to play for the pride and make the Durban North and the country proud,” she said.
