uMhlanga gardener heroically stops break-in suspect

The gardener was assaulted in the attempted break-in attempt on Lagoon Drive.

THE quick-thinking actions of a gardener at a Lagoon Drive complex stopped a suspect who had broken into a home on Monday afternoon. Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, said the gardener managed to stop the would-be thief even though he was assaulted in the altercation.

“The suspect was spotted breaking into the flat and was seen by the gardener. The gardener managed to grab the suspect and in the ensuing struggle was struck in the head. The suspect used a brick in the assault and the victim had a cut to the top of his head. The gardener was able to call for Enforce Security who detained the suspect before he was handed over to us. He has been charged with assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm as well as attempted housebreak-in,” he said.

This is the seventh incident in the space of 11 days, after an armed robbery in uMhlanga on Saturday night on Herrwood Drive.

Craig Ardendoff of Sun Cell Watch urged residents in the area to be vigilant.

“This time of the month we usually see a spike in crime. I urge residents to be vigilant and report anything crime related to the police, Sun Cell Watch or your local neighbourhood watches,” he said.
