Women robbed in terror taxi ride, La Lucia

When one of the victims tried to call for help the suspects put on loud music to drown out her screams.

TWO people have been robbed by three armed men in a terror taxi ride on Addison Drive on Thursday at around 1pm. The duo became victims of a taxi driver and his accomplices who are robbing people needing lifts in the area. This is the fifth incident in a string of robberies in which women are attacked in a taxi.

The robberies come after a warning earlier this week by Durban North police.

According to Durban North SAPS spokesman, Capt Raymond Deokaran, the suspects are using a white Quantum mini-bus. The driver’s accomplices pretend to be passengers and then rob the unsuspecting passengers at knife-point or gunpoint.

In the latest incident, the women were robbed of her cash, cell phone and handbag.

“The victim was waiting for a taxi on Addison Drive. When she jumped into the taxi she noticed two other male passengers and a female passenger. As the taxi travelled down the road, the two male passengers pulled out a knife and demanded her valuables. The suspects also robbed the other female passenger. The men then drove towards Gateway with the passengers on board. As they neared the Millennium Bridge they pushed the ladies out of the taxi.

“When one of the victims tried to call for help, the driver put on loud music to drown out her screams. The men then drove off towards Phoenix. The victim tried to record the number plates but noticed the taxi didn’t have any. At this point we are warning domestic workers, gardeners and taxi commuters to be vigilant,” he said.

The second victim did not open a case with police.

Police believe the same men are behind the Tuesday night robbery of a Virginia student. She was robbed of her cell phone and laptop on Swapo Road (Broadway). One of the suspects produced a firearm and demanded her valuables. He then gave her R25 cash to get back home and was dropped off on Broadway and put his watch on the victim’s wrist to remember him by.
