ACSA warns of possible delays amid Cosatu strike

Passengers scheduled to depart from airports on Wednesday should make room for delays.

AIRPORTS Company South Africa (ACSA) has urged passengers to allow for delays and longer travelling time to and from the airport. The announcement comes as the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) expect thousands to pack the Durban city centre in a march they have said is to strike over State capture. The strike is taking place across the country, getting underway at 10am.

In a statement ACSA said: “We have been monitoring reports about the strike.  Given the statements issued by the South African Police Service and metro authorities, as well as uncertainties involved in anticipating the impact of strike action, the company has advised passengers to allow for delays and longer travelling time to the airport.”

Thousands of members from the Cosatu members are expected to embark on the national shutdown by the labour federation. This strike is as a result of revelations made by the former Public Protector about the scourge of corruption and the capture of key state institutions.

“Strike action of this nature is not entirely predictable and passengers scheduled to depart from airports on Wednesday should make every effort to give themselves more time to get to the airport,” said ACSA Strategic Communications Director, Julie Cunningham.

She said airport managements also advise passengers travelling on Wednesday to follow local news updates on the strike action.

“While strike action could affect various forms of transport, the company advises passengers heading for airport to use public transport wherever feasible,” Cunningham concluded.
