WATCH: How gale force winds battered Durban

According to the South African Weather Service, one of the highest wind speeds recorded was at King Shaka International Airport.

SEVERAL parts of Durban were caught in strong gale force winds on Saturday evening. According to the South African Weather Service, the highest wind speeds recorded were in Margate and King Shaka International Airport.

Trees were uprooted across the city‚ several of them damaging parked cars, including two incidents in Mount Edgecombe. A photo of stacked containers blowing over in the Durban port was also shared on social media.

The South African Weather Service also had its hands full with hoax reports of a cyclone hitting Port Edward. The service also tweeted the highest wind speeds recorded during the gale force winds.

On Sunday another hoax message surfaced about Hurricane Sifiso. The message below was forwarded to various WhatsApp groups and began spreading like wildfire following the damage across the City.

“WEATHER ALERT: Hurricane Sifiso to hit KZN, please keep in doors as this storm is classified as a category 3 storm. Heavy gale force winds predicted at 90km/h with Gusts of 120km/h reported by Weather ALERT SA. Storm expected to subside in 3-4 days, Avoid travelling in these conditions. Please be cautious people. FORWARD TO FRIENDS & FAMILY”
