Two arrested for drag racing on North Coast Road

Police have warned drivers engaging in illegal drag racing that they will be arrested.

TWO people were arrested on Chris Hani Road (North Coast) earlier this week for reckless and negligent driving. According to Sergeant Vincent Mthembu, spokesman for the Greenwood Park SAPS, the drivers’ cars had also been confiscated.

“The men were charged for reckless and negligent driving on North Coast Road and were allegedly drag racing on the road. They were arrested and we are now investigating to see whether the vehicles, both Seat Ibizas, were modified. The drivers have appeared in court and have been released on bail,” he said.

Mthembu urged residents to report illegal drag racers to the Metro Police and Greenwood Park SAPS.

For the last seven months, residents have demanded action from the police. DA ward councillor, Bobby Maharajh, said the racing mostly occurred over the weekends but has since last year been taking place during the week.

“It usually starts after 11pm any day of the week. The screeching and revving from the illegally-modified vehicles travels far and loud during the nights,” he said.
