Durban set to change its face and regain beauty

A call was made for more people of Durban to get involved in the regeneration process.

ETHEKWINI Municipality has unveiled plans to regenerate the inner city and make the city cleaner and investor friendly. The announcement was made by the Mayor Councillor Zandile Gumede at the launch of the radical CBD clean-up and safety programme at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli ICC on Friday.

The breakfast presentation was hosted by the city in partnership with the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI). The mayor said the plans to regenerate the inner city were based on the aspirations of the leadership to make Durban great.

“I promised in my inauguration speech to clean Durban and I believe that we are on track to do that. Our focus is on cleaning the city, safety and security, tourism and promoting trading.

“We need to come up with a progression plan for street traders to have clean spaces so that they can contribute to the GDP of the country. We will also focus on job creation and making the city investor-friendly,” said Gumede.

The DCCI president Musa Makhunga said the people of Durban need to get involved in the regeneration process.

“We need to own our city, when I went to Windhoek a few years ago I noticed that the citizens made it their problem to pick up rubbish on the streets. We are committed as the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry to build relationships between the city and the community, especially the business community,” said Makhunga.

The city will also pay attention the key economic drivers like tourism, business and education in implementing the regeneration plan as that will make eThekwini hospitable for investors.

The mayor concluded by promising that there will be more opportunities for the citizens to engage with the city to make sure that Durban is the city they are proud to present to the world.
