Don’t miss out on Natal Orchid Show

Parkhill Bowling Club is the place to be this weekend for the Natal Orchid Society's Orchid Show.

THEY say a beautiful garden is a work of heart. And there is no question about the fact that Melanie van Greunen’s garden in Fairway, Durban North is just that. The orchid lover who fell in love the flower at an early age will be at the Natal Orchid Society’s Orchid Show. It will run on Saturday, 16 and Sunday, 17 September at the Parkhill Bowling Club in Durban North.

Van Greunen is president for the Natal Orchid Society (NOC), an organisation formed in 1950’s. They meet once a month at the Parkhill Bowling Club from 6.30pm to 9 pm. Entrance cost R10. There is a culture corner and a plant table at the meetings where people can take their plants, put it on the table and the guest speaker or president, Gordon Louw, will give advice on the plants and the public can ask general questions.

“You can never stop learning about orchids as they are the largest variety of plant group in the world. Our youngest member is 12 years old,” van Greunen said.

At the show there will be potting demonstrations, competitions where members polish the leaves and put their best hybrids or original orchid on show in the hopes of winning a ribbon for their masterpiece.
