Rhino horns worth millions seized

The man had stowed the previous horn in his luggage.

WHILE the 4th annual Global March for Elephants & Rhinos is coming up in October, police this weekend arrested a man who was in possession of five rhino horns.

The man stowed the previous horn in his luggage. Police said the flight from OR Tambo International Airport was bound for Hong Kong.

“The identified bag and the owner were intercepted at the boarding gate. The passenger was escorted to the customs search area where the bag was put through the scanner and images resembling rhino horns could be seen among the contents. A physical search of the bag was conducted and five rhino horns were found wrapped in foil. The suspect was arrested,” the SAPS said on their Facebook page.

The march aims to raise awareness about poaching and illegal trade in rhino horn, elephant tusks, lion bones, and other illicit wildlife products and takes place on Saturday, 7 October from the Durban Amphitheatre at 9.30am.
