If you want loyalty, buy a dog

Celebrate 'Hug a Dog Day' this Sunday - a day emphasising the importance of having a long and lasting bond with your pets.

DOGS are a man’s best friend is a common phrase.  The friendship between dog and man dates back to 15 000 years when dogs followed men throughout their migrations in East Asia. Psychologically, this connection makes sense because both man and dog are social beings.

Human beings often forget that as much as they need to be shown affection, dogs need it too.

‘Hug Your Hound Day’ is a day that aims to remind humans that your four legged companion deserves recognition for being a protector, helper and a lifesaver. The day also emphasises how crucial it is to build the bond between your dog by understanding how life is when you see it from four legs.

‘Hug Your Hound Day’ will be held on Sunday, 10 September. It was originally created by dog expert Ami Moore, the “Dog Whisperer of Chicago” to remind people of the importance of having a long and lasting bond with their pets.

Trained as a Native American Medicine Woman, Ami sought to increase the health and happiness of canines through the creation of ‘Hug Your Hound Day’.

To celebrate this day you first give the dog a hug and tell them how much you love them. Then take some time thinking about how their world looks from down low, surrounded by human beings with everything built too high for them.

From that point you can start figuring out what kind of problems they have, anything from potty issues to chewing through the dry wall, and seek out ways to help curb them. Most negative behaviors are signs of an unhappy pet, and ‘Hug Your Hound Day’ is all about making sure your dog is happy and healthy.
