WATCH: Crawford learners beat the drum of excellence

This year the La Lucia school will be be performing at the Hilton Arts Festival.

LAST month Crawford College La Lucia Drumline competed announced themselves on the local scene by winning an inter-school drum line competition at Durban High School (DHS). The college’s drumline is made up of 14 learners from both the preparatory school and college ranging from Grade 2 to Grade 12 who take music as a subject with their instrument of interest being the drum.

This year the La Lucia school will be be performing at the Hilton Arts Festival led by drumming tutor and music teacher, Gareth Gale. Northglen News recently caught up with Gale and some of the learners involved in this year’s festival to find out what they were looking forward to.

“We began five years back with a couple of drummers who have subsequently matriculated. But we’ve developed a culture for drumline at the school and it has gained a structure where we get to a stage where we compete at competitions. A huge catalyst for the growth of drumline has been the Hilton Arts Festival.

“We are very fortunate with the school throwing its weight behind the event. For us it’s about taking the audience on a rhythmic journey through an energetic performance. We’ve performed for a wide variety of audiences but this festival is one of our favourites,” he enthused.
