Furious Somerset Park construction workers down tools

The men are laying fibre optic cables and are demanding an increase in their salaries.

ABOUT 50 construction workers laying fibre optic cables in Somerset Park have downed tools and stormed up Keynsham Avenue. The furious workers banged the post boxes and they marched up the road wielding spades, picks and hoes.

The ruckus started at around 12.20pm today with the men screaming and shouting. The workers who asked for anonymity confirmed to the Northglen News that they were promised a pay increase after three months and that had not happened.

“We get paid R130 a day for the work we do that is very dangerous because we work with electric cables. We were promised a pay rise after three months and the employer is now dodging us and that is why we have downed tools.”

The fibre optic laying process in the Sunningdale, Glen Anil and Somerset Park areas have been fraught with drama and the Northglen News inundated with calls from residents.

Several residents complained that their driveways had not been restored to the state it was prior to the laying of the cables. Last week, a Glen Anil couple were furious after their driveway was damaged.

The workers decided to march to their employer’s offices accompanied by the SAPS to voice their concerns.
