No reprieve for motorists as petrol price goes up, again

A whopping 67 cents petrol price increase is expected on Wednesday. South African motorists and commuters are in for another rough ride this month.

The Department of Energy on Monday confirmed that the price of petrol is set to increase by 67 cents from Wednesday. Motorists will now pay R13.72 for a litre in Gauteng while people in the coastal provinces will pay R13.23 for a litre of petrol.

Diesel prices are also set to increase by 44 cents a litre. The department told South Africans that the price of fuel products had increased globally during the current period of review, attributing the local increases to what is actually an international trend.
“The main contributing factors were the increase in crude oil prices and the weaker Rand [as well as] massive floods caused by the storm, which forced several refineries to close along the US Gulf Coast,” read a statement released by the department.

“These resulted in the supply shortage in the market, which led to higher prices of petroleum products,” continued the statement.
