M4 driver claims he was ‘sick’ and not drunk

Durban North SAPS arrested 23 people on the night including a driver who crashed into a stationary vehicle.

A MAN accused of drunk driving who smashed into a vehicle at a roadblock claimed he was ‘sick’ and not drunk. The man was arrested with 22 others on Saturday night at a roadblock on the M4 just before the Swapo Road off-ramp. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, the man crashed into the back of a stationary vehicle at the roadblock.

“The man was allegedly found with an empty bottle of Russian vodka and claimed not to know where it had come from. He also pulled out a cough syrup bottle and said he was sick. Police officers had to restrain the man during his arrest as he refuted claims that he was being arrested under suspicion of drunk driving.

Three people who were in the stationary vehicle were injured and treated by paramedics from Rescue Care and Crisis Medical.

Deokaran reiterated the message of the zero tolerance approach to drunk driving.

“Too many motorists are still risking their own safety as well as that of other road users by driving their vehicles after they have consumed alcohol. It is truly concerning how common place drunk driving is. We cannot continue to ignore the problem and allow drunk drivers to take to the street. If you’re going to drink, then don’t drive, either take a cab or make some other arrangement to get home,” he said.
