Barking good fun at pug Olympics

Some of the highlights of previous events include, obstacle races, the potato and spoon race and the sprint race.

IT’S time for one of the most ‘paw’some events of the year, the Pug Rescue South Africa’s annual Pug Olympics, which will be held at the Crusaders Sports Club on Sunday, 3 September starting at 10.30am. The ‘paw-fect’ event, said organiser, Storm Veronie, is aimed at creating awareness on, and raising funds for Pug Rescue South Africa.

The organisation, founded by Cheryl and Malcolm Gaw, strives to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home abandoned, neglected and surrendered pugs.

“As volunteers we try and organise as many fundraisers in Durban as possible so that we continue to rescue and re-home these loveable dogs,” said the Durban North resident. “This is usually our biggest event.”

The Durban North pug owner said some of the highlights of previous events include, obstacle races, the potato and spoon race and the sprint race.

“Earlier this year we held the Pug Walk along the Durban Beachfront which was a huge success. I hope residents come out and support the event, there are also various competitions to enter, such as the Best Dressed Pug, the Curliest Tail and the newest, Sporty Pug. These are always popular and so much fun,” added Veronie.

All of the funds raised during the event will be used to rescue, rehabilitate and home abused and neglected pugs across the country.

“We also welcome any and all donations, cash, blankets or food,” added Veronie.

Entrance costs R20 per adult, R10 per kids and one packet of Montego or Pedigree dentastix per pug.

  • This year’s Pug Olympics will be held at the Crusaders Sports Ground on Ranleigh Crescent from 10.30am at the second bowling green. For more information e-mail: stormveronie@gmail.com. Participants are encouraged to bring umbrellas, gazebos and chairs.
