‘Read up’ on book donation

Throughout the month of August, the centre management staff will be searching for schools that are in desperate need of a library.

PARK Boulevard Centre in uMngeni Park is once again asking parents and school children to pay it forward by digging through their bookcases for second hand children-appropriate books or going the extra mile by purchasing new ones to be donated to help aid reading in schools that do not have a library.

The KZN Department of Education spokesperson, Muzi Mahlambi applauded and welcomed the generosity of Park Boulevard Centre and general civilians in the call to collect books and build libraries in provincial schools.

According Mahlambi the department itself has a campaign called ‘Read to Lead’ which encourages learners to read books that are outside of the set curriculum.

“Our challenge as the department we don’t have enough resources to reach all schools and we encourage companies to contact us if they wish to help with the provision of books so we can give them the recognition deserved for their efforts,” he said.

Books can be dropped off at the branded drop off points at Park Boulevard Centre from Friday, 1 September.

However, Mahlambi said if companies reach out to the department it could help in identifying the schools in need. “We manage schools and that means we know each and every school’s need, we know what type of book are lacking and which schools needs them the most,” he said.
