Ongoing foul smell sickens North Durban residents

Stink from a Sea Cow Lake treatment plant flares up once again.

A FOUL smell is permeating through the air in north Durban. Yesterday, a post by a local resident on the Durban North Neighbours Facebook page garnered more than 20 comments.

Celeste Van Wyngaard said in the post: “Any update on the horrible stench filling the air again tonight? Doesn’t even have a smoke smell, pure sewage.”

Last week, members of the Ethekwini Fire and Rescue Services reported that there was a large amount of sludge smoldering at a plant in Sea Cow Lake.

The smell, after subsiding during the past week, is now back. Residents living in Durban North, Glenashley and even as far as Mount Edgecombe said they smelt the odour.

Some parents said their children were vomiting and struggling with severe sinuses. “ I suffered the worst headache last night and it’s still not better. My eldest woke up this morning with flu like symptoms. We were all feeling very nauseous last night,” said Wyngaard
