WATCH: How the giant stitch was closed at uMhlanga interchange

A VIDEO of how the giant stitch at the uMhlanga/Mount Edgecombe interchange was closed has surfaced. The video, which was uploaded by the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) shows how the structure was completed.

The north and south decks of the one-kilometre ramp was joined two weeks ago.

The bridge forms part of the improvements being undertaken by the SANRAL.

Gert van Schalkwyk, resident engineer (structures) from SMEC South Africa, said what sets B0215 (four level interchange) apart from anything else previously or currently being done in South Africa is not only its sheer size and length, but also the fact that the bridge is constructed in two decks. These he said are both incrementally launched from opposite sides with the intention to meet in the centre.
