R8 000 the minimum wage in SA, says Pacsa

According to the organisation a family of five can afford the basics with R8 000.

THE minimum wage for South Africa should be set at R8 000. This is according to the Pietermaritzburg Agency for Community Social Action (Pacsa).

Speaking to the Northglen News, Mervyn Abrahams, the organisation’s director, said the amount was determined to be the minimum for a family of five to live with dignity and afford the absolute basics.

He said they had based this on an analysis of people’s monthly food expenses and the demographic in the country.

“We also looked at the family’s other expenses such as water and electricity,” he said.

According to Abrahams, a low wage trajectory leads to very low economic growth.

“If people do not have money to spend the economy can not grow,” he said.
