Plant fair set to bloom in Durban North

In addition to catching a glimpse of these colourful beauties, the public will also be able to enjoy pruning, potting and mounting demonstrations from a a number of experts.

AVID orchid fans are in for a treat this August as the annual Fairway Orchid and Rare Plant Fair returns to Durban North.

Orchids, staghorn ferns, aloes, bromeliads, bonsais, tillandsias and heliconias are just some of the flora that people can expect to buy and see on the day.

In addition to catching a glimpse of these colourful beauties, the public will also be able to enjoy pruning, potting and mounting demonstrations from a a number of experts.

Gordon Louw, president of the Natal Orchid Society (NOS) will also be sharing some valuable advice on plant care.

The public will have the opportunity to view some prime species of orchids such as Cattleyas, Dendrobiums and Phalaenopsis (also known as moth orchids), displayed by members of The NOS.

“These beautiful orchids are now coming into flower, so it is the perfect time to showcase the species,” said vice president of the NOS and event organiser, Melanie van Greunen.

Van Greunen, who is a Fairway resident, urged orchid enthusiasts to join and attend the NOS’s monthly meetings to share and improve their passion.

“When people start out with orchids they often tend to go for the most bright and beautiful blooms – which are often hybirds – and they do not know how to care for these plants. While the experienced enthusiasts become drawn to the species – the more challenging and naturally found orchids. Through the meetings we strive to provide our members with advice on how to best care for these growing treasures,” she said.

The meetings are held every second Monday of the month at the Parkhill Bowling Club at 6pm. An annual fee of R295 is charged per household.

The fair will take place on Saturday, 12 August at 118 Fairway, Durban North from 9am until 4pm.

Entrance costs R15 per person. Children under 12 are free. Refreshments will be available with a tea garden serving coffee, tea, cake and light lunches all day.
